Yve Lomax, Open Rings and Partial Lines, 1984

Open Rings and Partial Lines is a multipart work. The images in each panel seem to both interact, in their representations of women and transit, and to disconnect, as they are each of a different angle and quality. The work asks the viewer to make connections and perhaps to create a narrative between the images, but does not specify what story should be told. Lomax made the work during a period when the truth-value of images was being decisively interrogated, and this work purposefully tries to resist a simple interpretation and to open up the representation of women in popular culture from the constraint of stereotype. Lomax wrote of the series: “There is nothing whole or essential regarding sexuality. Sexuality is a construction which concerns many parts.”
